LockDown Browser: Requiring Monitor for a Quiz
Introduction
Respondus Monitor is a digital proctoring application that works in conjunction with Respondus LockDown Browser. Respondus Monitor records exam sessions via Webcam, flagging unusual behavior with links to moments in the recording that may warrant a closer look.
Note: Licensing for Respondus Monitor is limited. Please open an ITS Help Request for questions about its use.
Requiring Respondus Monitor for a Quiz
- Select Respondus LockDown Browser from your course menu.
- In Blackboard, this is under the Course Tools expansion in the Control Panel
- If prompted, click Authorize or Continue to LockDown Browser. You will see a list of all the quizzes in your course. Click the drop-down menu next to the relevant quiz and select Settings.

- Select both radio buttons to Require Respondus LockDown Browser and Require Respondus Monitor for this exam. It is recommended that you enter a password here. Students will need this password to enter the exam.
Note: A separate alphanumeric string is automatically created in the Blackboard Test Options “Password” box for your test. Please do not modify that alphanumeric string. If you need to change the password for your test, come back to these settings.

- Select the Webcam + Screen or Screen Only box to also capture the screen while the student is taking this exam, if you want the option to review the screen recordings after the exam is completed.

- The Startup Sequence is a set of optional events that can be selected to occur before a Monitor webcam session begins. Click the Preview link next to each option to see what it would look like for students and decide whether you wish to display these startup options to them. Note that a webcam and facial detection check are required.

- Review the Facial Detection Options. For example, you may want to uncheck the second option if students are permitted to look at their notes during the exam.

- If necessary, click the plus icon (+) to expand the list of Advanced Settings and enable any that are required. See the image and Table below for descriptions of these settings.

Item
Description
A
Allow use of an iPad for this exam - Checking this option allows the iPad edition of LockDown Browser to be used for this Monitor exam. Further instructions should be provided to the student. Click the explain link for more information.
Note that screen recordings will not be captured on iPads.
B
Allow this exam to additionally be delivered in a proctored lab – Checking this box will enable a prompt for the student at the start of the exam. If they choose to use a webcam, they can continue with the Monitor process and will not need to enter the exam password. If they are in a proctored environment, they will need the proctor to provide the exam password for them to begin the test without the Monitor requirements.
C
Enable “Show Your Work” step at end of exam – Checking this box will add a prompt at the end for the students to hold up and photograph any scratch sheet(s) they may have used.
D
Edit Text – Click this link to expand the text box to edit the message that will be shown to students if you have enabled the “Show Your Work” step.
E
Demo student name – for admin purposes. This field allows for a demo student to be set as a test account so that it does not use up a paid license. You can leave this blank.
- Click Save + Close to confirm the use of Monitor and the settings you have configured.
Alert for Faculty:
Do NOT enable the second camera feature in LockDown Browser Monitor for secure, in-person exams. This feature requires students to connect an additional mobile device to provide a secondary video angle. Therefore, it contradicts our established best practices for exam administration, which discourage the use of multiple devices because they create network congestion that degrades connectivity and disrupts the testing environment for all students. Configure Monitor with the primary webcam only to ensure stable network performance and equitable testing conditions.
