Zoom: Nonverbal Feedback
Introduction
Non-verbal feedback and meeting reactions provide a simple and quick way for meeting attendees to communicate with each other. Basic questions can be answered by meeting attendees using buttons rather than waiting for them to type in the chat window or unmute themselves. Hosts, co-hosts, and participants will see the icons next to names in the Participants list, including the total number of each response type at the bottom, as well as in the upper left-hand corner of the video thumbnails in the meeting. Importantly, when a participant uses the Raise Hand feature, their video thumbnail is pushed to the top left of the Gallery View grid, so that they are more visible to the host/instructor. This rearrangement is also reflected in the Participants list, where those with a raised hand are moved toward the top.
If you have not yet downloaded the Zoom Desktop application, go to quinnipiac.zoom.us in your web browser, click Download Client at the bottom of the page, and download Zoom Client for Meetings on the subsequent page.
Enabling Nonverbal Feedback
- Sign into the Zoom Web Portal. Alternatively, you can navigate to the Zoom Sign-in page and click Sign In.
- Select Settings on the left.
- Select the Meeting tab and navigate to In Meeting (Basic).

- If Non-verbal feedback is off, you must toggle the switch to the On position for hosts, co-hosts, and participants to be able to use the Yes, No, Slower, and Faster buttons.

- If Meeting reactions is off, you must toggle the switch to the On position for hosts, co-hosts, and participants to be able to use the Clap, Thumbs Up, Laugh, and other buttons.
Providing Non-verbal Feedback
- Join the Zoom meeting as a participant.
- Open the Reactions menu from the control bar.

- Select a feedback or reaction button. Click an icon to display that feedback or reaction next to your name in the Participants list. The icon will also appear in the upper left-hand corner of your video thumbnail. Reaction icons (e.g. thumbs up) will stay for 10 seconds before disappearing automatically, while all other nonverbal feedback icons (e.g. Raise Hand, Yes) must be removed by the participant or the host/co-host (participants cannot remove each other’s icons).
NOTE: A nonverbal feedback icon can appear simultaneously with one of the reaction icons, and all of these are now available to hosts and co-hosts as well as participants.

Managing Non-verbal Feedback
- Open the Participants panel from the control bar.

- View individual feedback next to a person’s name.

- View total responses for a feedback/reaction. This is found at the bottom of the Participants list. Keep in mind that all reaction emojis (e.g. clapping) will disappear after 10 seconds, which will affect the count total.

- Lower a single participant’s raised hand by clicking Lower Hand next to their name (host and co-host only). Participants can lower their own hand from the Reactions button in the meeting control bar.
